Supporting Our Committee Member Steve Hammond as He Takes on 100-mile solo cycle for Life After Cancer Essex
At ECTA / EB Training Group, we believe that supporting our community goes beyond training. We are proud to support one of our committee members, Steve Hammond, as he takes on another incredible fundraising challenge for Life After Cancer Essex (LACE).
This August, Steve will be cycling the 100-mile South Downs Way National Trail, travelling solo from Winchester to Eastbourne to raise vital funds for LACE, a not-for-profit Community Interest Company that supports people across Essex who have been affected by cancer.
A Charity with a Personal Story
Life After Cancer Essex was founded by Steve and his late wife, Jo, following Jo’s diagnosis and treatment for stage 3 bladder cancer. After undergoing major surgery and experiencing the isolation that followed, Jo recognised the importance of connecting people who truly understood the emotional and practical challenges of living with cancer.
Sadly, after LACE was established, Jo received the devastating news that her cancer had spread and there would be no cure. She passed away in July 2023, and Steve has continued her legacy by helping the charity grow and supporting hundreds of people across Essex.
Making a Real Difference
Today, LACE supports more than 115 full members and over 450 members, carers, family and friends, providing a welcoming community for those affected by cancer.
The charity organises a wide range of wellbeing activities and support events, including:
- Weekly Walk & Talk groups
- Yoga, meditation and mindfulness sessions
- Creative workshops including painting and pottery
- Outdoor activities and social events
- Seasonal celebrations and community gatherings
These activities provide opportunities for people to connect, share experiences and support one another throughout their cancer journey.
Steve’s Challenge
On 25 August 2026, Steve will tackle the demanding South Downs Way, covering approximately 100 miles (160 km) across the challenging chalk ridges between Winchester and Eastbourne.
While the distance is slightly shorter than some of Steve’s previous fundraising rides, the constant climbs and descents make this one of his toughest challenges yet.
Every pound raised will help Life After Cancer Essex continue providing vital support and wellbeing activities for people living with or affected by cancer.
How You Can Help
If you are able to support Steve’s fundraising efforts, any donation—large or small—will make a real difference.
Just as importantly, if you know someone in Essex who is living with or recovering from cancer, or a family member or carer who could benefit from additional support, please encourage them to get in touch with Life After Cancer Essex.
Together, we can help ensure that nobody has to face their cancer journey alone.
From everyone at ECTA / EB Training Group, we wish Steve the very best of luck with his ride and thank him for his continued commitment to supporting such an incredible cause!
